Description

Imagine a spectral face emerging from the depths of the cosmos: IC 2118, the Witch Head Nebula, unfolds its eerie profile in the constellation Eridanus, right next to Orion. Seen in profile, this ethereal structure reveals what strangely resembles a witch's face, with its long hooked nose and pointed chin standing out against the starry background.

Some 900 light-years away from us, this immense stellar nursery stretches across about 50 light-years — a size that could encompass several times the distance between our Sun and its neighboring stars. What strikes you first is its mesmerizing blue hue. This color is no accident: it comes from the light of Rigel, one of Orion's brightest stars, a blue-white supergiant whose intense radiation reflects off the nebula's dust clouds. These dust grains have a fascinating property: they scatter blue light much more efficiently than other colors, exactly like the molecules in our Earth's atmosphere give the sky its beautiful azure tint.

But the Witch Head is more than just a pretty sight for astrophotographers. It's a true cosmic cauldron where new stars are being born. Deeply buried in its swirls of gas and dust hide very young stars, similar to what our Sun was like billions of years ago. The nebula's stretched shape, as if swept by a cosmic wind, bears witness to the influence of nearby massive stars whose powerful winds sculpt and shape these clouds of matter.

Discovered in 1786 by astronomer William Herschel, IC 2118 is part of a much larger network: the Orion molecular cloud complex, one of the nearest and most studied star-forming regions by astronomers worldwide.
