The Iris

NGC 7023

Description

I present here the Iris Nebula, catalogued NGC7023. This is a reflection nebula (in the center of the image). Unlike emission nebulae that emit their own light, reflection nebulae only reflect light from neighboring stars. In this case, at the center of this nebula is the cluster OCL 235.

All around, we find lots of absorption nebulae, also called dark nebulae. This is the 3rd type of nebula possible. Unlike the other 2, this one doesn't emit light but blocks it, then appearing darker than the background.

At the very top of the photo, slightly to the left of center is the Ghost of Cepheus, VDB141. It is a small nebula containing a reflection part and an absorption part.
